Why do down jackets fall apart at the seams?
A down jacket is sewn into channels that hold the down in place. When a seam opens, the feathers start to leak out and the jacket quickly loses its warmth. This often happens in the armpits, shoulders or along the zipper, as these areas are exposed to the most wear and tear. Sometimes the seams are simply too thin to begin with. If you repair them in time, you will avoid losing more down and you will significantly extend the life of the jacket.
This is what you need
To repair a torn seam, all you need is a sewing needle, strong polyester thread in a color similar to the jacket, and possibly a small piece of fabric or repair patch. Since down jackets often have tightly woven fabric, it can also be helpful to have a needle threader or thimble.
Step by step – this is how you do it
Start by shaking the down so that the feathers are not right next to the hole. Push them into the channels so you don't accidentally sew them on.
Thread the needle with double thread and tie a small knot at the end. Start sewing a little before the broken seam and work your way across the entire crack. Use small, tight stitches. The thread should be taut but not so tight that the fabric wrinkles.
If you see that the fabric around the seam is weakened, you can reinforce the repair with a repair patch. They are self-adhesive and can be applied both inside and outside. If you heat it with an iron, it will hold even better.
When you are finished, tie the thread on the inside of the jacket. Pull through the last stitch so that the knot is hidden in the lining and not visible.
Tips for making the repair last
Polyester thread is always better than cotton because it does not tear as easily in smooth fabrics. Small stitches make the repair tight and reduce the risk of the down leaking out again. If the tear is small, the repair will be almost invisible, so it is best to repair as soon as you notice the damage. If the tear is longer than five to six centimeters, it is wise to use a patch as reinforcement.
When do you need to return the jacket?
If an entire channel has burst open, if a lot of the down has already disappeared, or if the fabric is so thick that a regular household sewing machine cannot sew it, then it is best to take the jacket to a tailor or repair shop. Many outdoor stores have their own partnerships with repair services.
