Sew a fabric bag with a zipper – step by step

👜 Sew a fabric bag with a zipper – step by step

Simple, stylish and durable!

Sewing a small cloth bag is a super fun and easy project – perfect for beginners or those who just want something quick and creative. What's even better? This project requires very few materials , and you often already have what you need at home!

🧵 Our tip: Use recycled fabric – for example, an old tea towel, curtain, shirt or second-hand piece of clothing.

✂️ You need:

Two pieces of fabric, approx. 25 x 20 cm (outer fabric + lining)

1 zipper, approx. 20–25 cm long

Matching sewing thread

Pins

Sewing machine (or patience if you want to sew by hand!)

Here we have put together a kit

🧰 Here's how you do it:

1. Attach the zipper

Place the outer fabric right side up. Place the zipper on top, right side down, along the long side. Place the lining fabric on top, wrong side up. Pin together and sew close to the edge.

2. Press and sew the other side

Unfold the fabrics so the zipper is visible, press with an iron and repeat the same thing with the other side.

3. Sew the bag together

Place outer fabric against outer fabric and lining against lining, right sides together. Open the zipper a little so you can turn it over later! Sew around the edges, but leave an opening in the lining.

4. Turn and finish

Turn the bag through the opening, poke out the corners. Sew the hole in the lining by hand or machine. DONE!

♻️ Why recycle?

By using fabric you already have at home – or found at a flea market – you save both money and the environment.
Old textiles are often of high quality, and there is also something special about creating new things from something old.

Tip: Old shirts make sturdy fabric with nice details. Thinner curtains work great as lining. Children's clothes can become small bags!

💡 More ideas:

Sew several bags in different sizes – for pens, makeup, small items, travel kits…

Add a label, lace or decorative ribbon for personal style.

Give as a gift – filled with trinkets or candy!
