Getting started with quilting doesn't require much equipment. Most of it is simple, and you can add to it over time.
1. Scissors and cutting tools
A good fabric scissors is important. It should preferably only be used for fabric so that it stays sharp.
Many also use:
- rotary cutter
- cutting mat
This makes it easier to get straight and even pieces.
2. Ruler
A fabric ruler helps you measure and cut precisely. This makes a big difference when the pieces need to fit together later.
3. Sewing machine
A simple sewing machine is perfectly adequate for quilting. The most important thing is that it sews a stable straight stitch.
4. Pins and clips
Pins or fabric clips are used to hold the fabrics together so they don't slip when you sew.
5. Thread
A good thread makes a difference in durability. A common choice for quilting is Gütermann quilting thread, which comes in many colors (around 50).
It is strong, even, and works well for seams that need to hold multiple layers of fabric.
6. Iron
The iron is used to press seams as you sew. This makes the pieces lie flat and easier to work with.
7. Cutting surface
A cutting mat protects the table and makes it easier to cut straight lines together with a rotary cutter and ruler.
