Sashiko – a technique for mending and reinforcing 🇯🇵

Sashiko – en teknik för att laga och förstärka

Sashiko is a Japanese sewing and embroidery technique that involves many small stitches sewn in repeated patterns. The technique has historically been used to repair and reinforce textiles, but can also be decorative. The stitches are usually sewn in geometric patterns and give a clear graphic expression while strengthening the fabric.

A tradition linked to recycling

Historically, sashiko arose from the need to conserve resources. Clothes and textiles were valuable and should be used for as long as possible. By patching and reinforcing fabrics with stitches, garments could last longer. The technique is therefore strongly linked to the idea of recycling and taking care of what you already have.

Philosophy and respect for craftsmanship

Sashiko is not only a technique but also linked to a certain view of craftsmanship and resources. For example, in Japan there is the tradition of Hari-Kuyō , a festival where old and broken needles are honored by placing them in soft materials such as tofu. The tradition expresses respect for tools and work, and is connected to the idea of not wasting things unnecessarily.

A technique that is easy to get started with

Although the results may look advanced, the technique itself is relatively easy to learn. Sashiko is based on the principle of a bridge stitch and can therefore be used even by beginners. There are certain guidelines for how the stitches should be related to each other in length and spacing, but at the same time there is great freedom to experiment and create your own variations.

Sashiko in modern times

Today, sashiko is used for both mending and decorative embroidery. The technique is popular in sustainable fashion and so-called visible mending, where repairs are not hidden but instead highlighted as part of the garment's expression. By mending clothes in this way, you can extend their lifespan while creating unique textiles.
